RUST

Sometimes I travel through time when the rains come
Thoughts of days long gone by return to me
They wash over me and soak right in

The warmth of early morning sunshine
The chill of a secret river
The security of a snow fort
The magic of a summer night

Flying on a brand new bike
Hiding in a field of windswept grass
Whispered words in high school halls
A stolen kiss that gets returned

Words and faces from long ago
Resurface inside me and rise up
A flash of smile or a glimpse of frown

They've left me behind to face their lives alone
I've left them behind too
To face a life they'll never know
Or will we ever meet again?

The bright steel of all those moments
Eaten away at by years gone by
My memories have become like rust

And then the rain says goodbye
And the sun comes out again
To dry up the puddles of regret and guilt

Not quite as bright as that day we first met
Or as dark as the day we slipped apart
But somewhere in between

Like a corroded pipe that finally breaks
I shake the layers of rust from my mind
And smile

Until the rains come for me again...
