I turn to you and smile
As I speak your name
Spinning, turning, very slowly
Nothing random about it
Your gaze drifts over the features of my face
As you ask me what happened today
Right Ascension, Declination
Up and to the left
We sit down on a park bench
Next to a hot dog stand, and I begin
Focused in on a very small quadrant
Ignoring the rest of the galaxy tonight
Birds and dogs and babies crying
It all fades into the background while I speak
Starlight bounces around in a tube
Mirrors direct it to my eye
Then... a shooting star
Burns across the night
A tiny chunk of rock
Tearing a hole in the sky
Then... you suddenly stop me
And ask me if I'd like something to eat
Seven seconds of our lives go by
While you wait for me to answer
The giant telescope breaks away to try and track the meteor
While a supernova is quietly born in Orion's Belt
The eye slowly turns but the meteor has already disappeared
The fire in Orion fades back into the darkness
You and I are disconnected
My transmission interrupted
The current tapped and filtered
To allow some useless signal to interfere
Break the dish and bend the tube
Open wide and listen up
Separate the static from the signal
Before our window of opportunity closes
Forever
