Welcome to the Digital Men homepage! The Digital Men are 4 guys who all live hundreds of miles apart, they all love to play songs by Rush, and they have never met (well 2 of them did just recently). After Kirk posted a recording of himself playing Tom Sawyer and Limelight on his drums (using his video camera no less), well, we all had to join in! Recorded MP3 tracks of each of us playing our respective parts of various Rush songs were swapped back and forth over the net and mixed together, we got a little positive feedback, and the "Rush Remix Project" was born, which eventually evolved into The Digital Men. With every new song we record, we work harder to try and get the song to sound as true to the original as possible, leaving just a little room for a little individuality to shine through. Feel free to e-mail us your feedback or song suggestions!

UPDATES

Aug 13/08 UPDATE - Red Barchetta and Freewill are finally DONE! Check out both final mixes in the songs section.

June 15/08 UPDATE - Quick Update: Uploaded an Alternate Vocal Ending version of Limelight to the server. Check it out in the songs section.

Jan 20/08 UPDATE - Still working on Red Barchetta and SOR. Hope to have them finished soon. In the meantime, for you gearheads out there, I've created a new section for this site called Sounds which I am hoping to use for articles about how we are doing some of the stuff we are doing. To start things off, back in 2003 someone on the alt.music.rush newsgroup asked how the synth sound at the start of Tom Sawyer (nicknamed the "Growl" sound by Geddy) was created and which synth Geddy might have used to create it. It just so happened at that time that I had spent a lot of time trying to recreate that sound myself, so I wrote up a document about it and posted it online, and it is now available in the new Sounds section. And if anyone has any questions about what gear we use, how something was recorded, or how we made a certain sound, please feel free to email us.

Jan 10/08 UPDATE - Freewill is done! I finished the new vocal track, added the synths back in and completed a few other minor tweaks. Tell us what you think! SOR and Red Barchetta are still left to finish and then we can move on to some new songs...

Dec 31/07 UPDATE - I picked up a new vocal mic and tried it on Red Barchetta. Unfortunately the recording ended up being too hot in several placs so I will need to re-do the vocal track. But, I was so impressed with the clarity from the new vocal mic that I tried re-recording the vocal track for Freewill, which I have never been happy with, and I am extremely happy with the results! As soon as the other guys give me the thumbs up I will re-do the synth tracks, make some other minor tweaks, and then Freewill should hopefully be done! Stay tuned...

Dec 7/07 UPDATE - It's been a while! I'm still working on the mix for SOR. After not hearing the tune for a while and then coming back to it I can hear a few things that still need work. Hope to get back to work and finish it up after Christmas is over. Stay tuned...

Aug 28/07 UPDATE - Uploaded rough Mix 8b of Spirit Of Radio. Tweaked a few more volume and EQ levels and the balance of all the tracks, and added the "crowd cheer" sound effect. Also brought down the overall level a hair to reduce some crispy distortion in the top end. This might be the final mix!

Aug 13/07 UPDATE - Uploaded rough Mix 7b of Spirit Of Radio. Tweaked a few more volume and EQ levels, the arepeggiated guitar track and the balance of all the tracks. Almost done...

Aug 9/07 UPDATE - Uploaded rough Mix 5b of Spirit Of Radio. Tweaked the flanger effect on the arpgeggiated guitar in the intro, in the sequenced synth breaks, and at the end. Hope to finish the song up soon.

Mar 29/07 UPDATE - Our resident Digital Guitar Man Pete entered our rendition of Xanadu in a 70's Coverfest contest on the Harmony Central Forums. Many kind words were lobbed our way, but this comment really made me feel like all the hours of listening to the many, many, many rough mixes of Xanadu were all worth it:

From Natalie Maines:

Well, it took me all day between meetings, etc. but I finally listened to every entry. There is some outstanding stuff out there, and every one is to be congratulated for a job well done.

My personal favs were (in no particular order)

  • Space Truckin
  • TCB
  • Someboy Get Me A Doctor
  • Both versions of Tie Your Mother Down
  • Wasted
  • Sneakin Sally Through the Alley
  • Summer Breeze
  • Funeral For a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding

But the ace of the entire hand is Xanadu. That is just amazing.

Thanks Natalie, and thanks to all the others who offered their critiques as well! You can check out all the entries in the contest right here.

Mar 18/07 UPDATE - Here's our latest effort, rough mix 3b for Spirit Of Radio. Have a listen and tell us what you think!

Feb 10/06 UPDATE - I have always wanted to record a bass track for Limelight but never got around to it. Well, it's done! I also replaced the synth tracks and cleaned the rest of the song up a little, and in the interest of keeping everything up to date I created a new mix with Ben's bass track as well, so there are now 2 new remixed versions of the song. Next up, Spirit of Radio and Freewill...

Feb 8/06 UPDATE - A new rough mix of Red Barchetta is up. A few more tweaks and it should be complete. I recorded a new bass track for RB with my new Ibanez bass that I recently picked up. I think this bass is a keeper ;)

Dec 10/06 UPDATE - After a bit of a break, here are rough mixes 1a and 1b for Spirit Of Radio. Final mixes of Red Barchetta and Freewill are overdue, but I hope to have something soon.
